Best Skincare Regimens: A Step-by-Step Guide to Skincare

joyfullynourished.ca.jpg

I remember feeling absolutely clueless the first time a cosmetician used the word “toner”, like as if I knew what that was? She seemed dumbfounded I didn’t know what it was, but quickly filled me in on the fundamentals of a healthy skincare routine: cleanse, tone, treat, and moisturize. Don’t worry, I’ll explain this all by the end of this article.

In fact, today’s topic is going to cover a lot of ground (and it might be kinda long!), so jump to the parts that best fill your needs, or be OCD like myself and read every word. Dig through and you’ll event find some discount codes and goodies tucked in as well.

It’s a new year, a new you, so lets dive in and discover your new perfect skincare routine.

This is where I started: “…but I just like using soap and water.”

There was a time I felt like soap and water was all I needed. I was stubborn and I had terrible looking skin – so bad that my dad even offered to go to the drugstore and pick me up some creams! (yikes!).

I am beyond jealous for those special few who only use soap and water and have gorgeous, flawless skin with a radiant glow. But more likely than not, most of us will never fall into that category. Fear not, I’m here to demystify skincare for you and how to pick the best products to address your concerns.

Regimens

Call it whatever you like - a regimen, a routine, a ritual, or a method - what matters is that using a skincare regimen lays the foundation for healthy skin. And healthy skin is beautiful skin.

Products within a specific regimen collectively work together to target specific skin concerns. They complement each other to complement your skin.

And when you get your skincare right, your skin will look better, feel better, and your makeup will sit better and last longer too! (We’ll dig into this further in the oily and dry skin types).

Regimen Steps

A regimen is key to ensuring optimal results, and no matter which brand or collection you choose, I recommend 4 key steps, best done both morning and night:

4 step.jpg

1.       Cleanse

Cleansing removes dirt, oil, makeup, and other impurities.

2.       Tone – aka “prep”

Toning prepares skin to better absorb serums and moisturizers, as well as instantly replacing the hydro-lipid layer (which basically means it restores your skin’s natural pH level and protective barrier without exhausting your skin. Without toner, it takes your skin over two hours to recreate this protective layer!

3.       Treat

Treatments deliver a concentrated dose of ingredients to target your skin concerns. It might be in the form of a serum, an oil, an acne treatment, etc.

4.       Moisturize – aka “protect”
Moisturizing is the final step, adding a protective layer locking in active ingredients, maintain optimal hydration, and keeps pollutants and junk out of your skin. Don’t skip moisturizing, even if your skin is oily (trust me for now, but I’ll go into details on this when I blog about oily skin next week).

How to pick the BEST skincare for you

First, we need to determine your main concerns and skin type, after that the answer become crystal clear on which product collection will benefit you the most.

Another thing to consider is product purity. I personally only use and recommend brands that are safe for my health. There’s too many companies using ingredients that are harmful (learn more here). My two favourite brands are Helena Lane Skincare and Beautycounter.

Helene Lane creates handmade, organic, and unprocessed skincare products. Shop Helena Lane if you’re a purists. Use promo code JOYFUL for a 5% discount. www.helenalane.com

Beautycounter uses only the safest ingredients to create high-quality, high-performing, and long-lasting products with amazing results. Shop Beautycounter if you want products made from safer ingredients with proven results. www.beautycounter.com

Skin Concerns + Skin Types

If we were to meet in person I’d ask you a few simple questions:

  • “How would you describe your skin?” – oily, combo, normal, or dry

  • “What is your primary concern?” – fine lines, dull skin, oily skin, blemishes, wrinkles, sensitive skin, dry patches, etc.

  • And finally, “What’s your secondary concern?”

Below is a 30-second quiz to easily determine the best collection for you.

And the best part? You’ll get a discount AND a free gift at the end!*

( *free gift promo runs from January 8 - January 24, 2019, when you purchase the 4-Piece Regimen).

Find what's right for you in less than one minute.

Identifying Skin Types

  • Oily Skin – Oily skin feels oily all over. The nose, forehead, and chin are all shiny. It often has blemishes, large pores, and blackheads. Makeup seems to “slide off” quickly as well.

  • Combination Skin – Combo skin has tight cheeks and an oily t-zone (shiny nose, forehead, and chin).

  • Normal Skin – normal skin has no specifically oily or overly dry areas. It generally feels comfortable all over, maybe a little oily in the T-zone.

  • Dry Skin – uncomfortably dry and tight, often a little flaky. Prone to premature fine lines and wrinkles. Makeup seems to disappear as the skin is so thirty is “drinks it in”.

Each skin type has its own concerns, but don’t fret - we’ll cover which regimens will help!

Regimen Collections at a glance

Each product collection (and individual product) has a specific purpose. I recommend starting with a specific collection and add in complementary products, rather than randomly buying products from different collections or brands.

Each collection is formulated for a specific skin type and its related concern. Once you’ve determined your skin type it’s much easier to choose the collection that will be most beneficial for your skin.

Over the next few weeks I’ll be digging deep into each collection – as well as some amazing booster products you can add into your routine for amazing results! But here today we’ll briefly cover 5 of Beautycounter’s skincare regimens:
